The South African Mint is the official national mint of the Republic of South Africa, and manufactures coins for the South African Reserve Bank. It is known around the world for its Krugerrand bullion coins, which at one time accounted for 90% of the global bullion coin market. Unusually for a bullion coin, the Krugerrand was given legal tender status, making it easily exchangeable. As well as the original 1oz coin, the South African has also released three smaller coins, containing a half ounce, quarter ounce and tenth ounce of pure gold. In addition to this, the mint produces coins for Zimbabwe and South Sudan, which are minted at its headquarters in Centurion, Gauteng Province.
