Monnaie de Paris 2016 Orsay Museum 50€ 5oz silver coin

2016 Orsay Museum 50€ 5oz silver coin
  • £423.00

This series of Orsay Museum coins are produced by Monnaie de Paris, France’s oldest continuously operating minting institution, founded in 864. This silver coin has a nominal value of 50€, however they are traded at a much higher price on the bullion coin market due to the state-of-the-art know-how of the Monnaie de Paris craftsmen who are able to expertly and creatively engrave precious metals. Since 2007, Monnaie de Paris has honoured various monuments listed on the UNESCO “world heritage cultural property sites”, and in 2016, Monnaie de Paris celebrated two famous Parisian locations linked to the art world: Orsay Museum and Petit Palais.

This 2016 Orsay Museum 50€ 5oz silver coin bears a modern yet classically inspired and intricate design. With an impressive fineness of 950 and a unique look, the obverse depicts the interior part of the nave of the Musée d’Orsay, with arches embellished with gold gilding. The Orsay clock also features in gold at the centre of the coin, a reminder of the building’s previous purpose as a train station, turned into a museum dedicated to the arts of the 19th century, such as impressionists. The Petit Palais’s exceptional façade, spanning over 150 metres, is portrayed in the lower part of the coin, and an application of black rhodium accentuates the curving lines of the two buildings. The reverse, common to the whole series, is divided into two parts: the UNESCO logo and the face value are shown on the left side, and on the right there is an aerial view of the location of the two monuments, with the two sides are joined by the course of the Seine across Paris.
