This series of Queen Mathilde coins are produced by Monnaie de Paris, France’s oldest continuously operating minting institution, founded in 864. This gold coin has a nominal value of 50€, however they are traded at a much higher price on the bullion coin market due to the state-of-the-art know-how of the Monnaie de Paris craftsmen who are able to expertly and creatively engrave precious metals.

This 2016 Queen Mathilde 50€ 1/4oz gold coin bears a modern yet historically inspired design, with an impressive fineness of 999.9 and a unique look, featuring an uneven coin shape. The obverse of this coin depicts a crowned portrait of Matilda of Flanders (around 1031 – 1083), who in 1050 married the Duke of Normandy, William the Bastard, who would become William the Conqueror after his victory at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, crowning Matilda Queen of England in 1068. A graphical pattern enhances the central drawing of Matilda, and the reverse shows William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in a famous scene from the Bayeux Tapestry. On the upper part of the reverse, close to the reference to the Hastings Battle and to its date, the Halley’s comet is depicted, visible in the sky on the day of the Battle.
