The Gold Maple Leaf is the official bullion coin of Canada, and is among the finest gold bullion coins in the world. First issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979, it was introduced at a time when the only other bullion coin, the Krugerrand, was not widely available due to the economic boycott of Apartheid-era South Africa. Between 1979 and 1982, the fineness of each Gold Maple Leaf was .999, but in 1982 this was raised to .9999. Some special edition coins even have a purity grade of .99999, making them highly valuable and collectable bullion items. This Gold Maple Leaf 1/2oz Coin is beautifully designed, with the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse side and the Canadian maple leaf on the reverse. This is a symbol of the continuing relationship between Canada and the United Kingdom, and demonstrates the pure simplicity of the coin.
